Friday
City art excursions
A GATE weekend kicks off with a day of art excursions around the host school's city. This is an opportunity for the host to share what makes their city such an inspiring place for teaching and making art. Visiting art teachers are given an exciting and memorable opportunity to experience a new location through the lens of visual art.
Past excursions have included visits to major artist exhibitions at museums and art galleries, street photography, video walks, urban sketching and historical art tours in inspiring locations.
Saturday
Workshop sessions
GATE is structured to ensure a balance of offerings so that there is something for everyone. Whether you teach Pre-K, elementary, middle or high school, there will be a session for you, with a range of art disciplines and subjects from which to choose.
Sessions include practical, hands-on workshops as well as informative discussion forums.
Job-Alikes are also scheduled on Saturday. These sessions provide opportunities to share, collaborate and connect with other art educators who teach the same age level, division, or course.
Sunday
Workshops & special sessions
If you’re lucky, you have figured out how to balance your art teaching with your own art practice. For many of us, it’s not so easy. Sunday is dedicated to the Teacher as Artist...providing time for you to create, be inspired, and perhaps try something you’ve always wanted to do but haven’t found the time or opportunity.
Some past Special Sessions have included guided painting in the Tuscan landscape, a Sewing Bee for exchanging textile knowledge, an Urban Sketchers excursion, a Virtual Reality experience and Open Studios for 2D, 3D and 4D art.
